I have a clear idea of what I would like in my next role. One of those things is I'd like to join somewhere small and be there for a long time. For that to happen, the fit has to be right. To help understand if we would be a match, here are some traits I'm looking for.

I'm flexible about working in particular industries, I've enjoyed building my knowledge across various domains to date. Instead, I prefer to think about the type of problem to be solved. I enjoy working on problems where a high degree of craft will have a genuine impact on the user.

In an age of highly commoditised, off-the-shelf, product design (this is no slight, I'm a fan of democratising access to design) I think details matter and I enjoy sweating them.

A big part of enjoying my job is shipping work that reflects the intent that my team and I had. Something to be proud of. I've experienced first-hand shipping work that's felt like a shopping list of excuses. It's shit.

I’d rather move too fast than too slow. Good design is iterative, moving quickly allows us to crank through versions until we arrive at the goldilocks moment, something that feels just right.

I recognise this can often be a tug-of-war with being quality-focused. But when paired with a bit of pragmatism, it doesn't have to be. Sometimes it's better to ship sooner, get feedback and adjust. In some cases it's not. If you're quality-focused, the end goal will be the same, but the path to get there is different.
